SAN FRANCISCO - In recognition and as confirmation of the important relations between Japan and the State of Nevada, the Government of Japan has appointed Mrs. Kathleen Blakely, Senior Management Analyst, Department of Parks & Recreation, Clark County and President of the Japan America Society of Nevada, as the new Honorary Consul General of Japan in Las Vegas (Nevada) with statewide jurisdiction, after the resignation of her predecessor, the Honorable Wayne Norio Tanaka.

Mrs. Blakely, a U.S. citizen born in Japan and a resident of Las Vegas, has a wide range of international experience and extensive interactions with Japan. Since moving to the city in 1992, she has been a keen observer of how Las Vegas has grown in importance as a destination for Japanese trade and tourists in recent decades. She has been an active member of the Japan America Society of Nevada, a non-profit, non-partisan organization established in 1995 with a mission of enhancing the relationship between the peoples of Japan and Nevada. She was elected the Society's President in 2001.

Mrs. Blakely is the second appointee to the post since the Honorary Consul General in Las Vegas was established in 2003. Japan's relationship with Nevada, as well as that of Las Vegas, has been steadily developing, with Las Vegas serving as a port of entry for about 200,000 Japanese tourists and businesses yearly; this number being the third largest after Honolulu and Los Angeles. She is committed to fostering this relationship further in such areas as government, trade and business, education and culture. Mrs. Blakely formally began her term as Honorary Consul General on November 1, 2008.
