President Obama has spoken about the need for the construction of a high speed rail network as a critical component of a transportation system suitable for the 21st century. High speed rail is an environmentally friendly technology that is a key to realizing low-carbon intercity transportation. Over the past 45 years, the Japanese government has built 1,360 miles of high speed rail.
On Thursday, January 21st, the Japanese government will hold a seminar to share its significant expertise in building a rail-centric society in Washington D.C. During this seminar, Japanese Shinkansen technology will be introduced and a discussion will follow regarding possible applications to current and future rail projects. Both the economic and environmental impacts of high speed rail will also be discussed and an appeal will be made for the need for additional investment in rail in the United States.
