The Japan Information Center of the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco is pleased to announce that it will open a new exhibition titled "Representation of Kimono is Clay" featuring about 20 pieces by Shigemi Sanders. Sanders fascination with ceramics started in the early 1970s when she made vases and platters at a local church in Los Angeles. That initial spark lead to serious ceramics study and several exhibitions throughout California. Sanders says "my artwork expresses my cultural thoughts and joy of life through creation of ceramic ware. Reflecting on my earlier upbringing in Japan, I strive to convey the beauty and cultural depths of Japan by taking on themes such as kimono, seasonal flowers, landscapes, and folk arts." She will give a talk at the opening of this exhibition on what "raku" style ceramic is and differences in ceramic arts of Japan and the United States. This exhibition will be open until March 4th.
