The 38th Japanese Speech Contest For Elementary School Students Back

The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco and the Japanese American Association of Northern California (Hokka Nichi Bei Kai) will hold the 38th Japanese Speech Contest for elementary school students on Sunday, March 7th 2010.

3 ELIGIBILITY:
1
Students who are currently attending local elementary school
2
Elementary school students who have not lived in Japan for more than 3 consecutive months after the age of three
3
Elementary school students who study Japanese as a foreign language at school for fewer than a total of five hours a week
4
Former first place winners of this contest are not eligible to enter unless they are applying for a different grade group
   
4 CATEGORIES:
  Contestants will be divided into the following four categories:
  Group A: 1st ~ 3rd grade(as of February 1, 2010)
Category 1: Contestants who come from homes where Japanese is not spoken.
(10 contestants maximum)
Category 2: Contestants who come from homes where Japanese is spoken.
(10 contestants maximum)
Group B: 4th grade and above(as of February1, 2010)
Category 3: Contestants who come from homes where Japanese is not spoken. (10 contestants maximum)
Category 4: Contestants who come from homes where Japanese is spoken.
(10 contestants maximum)

SPEECH TOPICS & LENGTH OF SPEECH: Contestants are free to choose the title and subject of their speeches. Speeches should be no longer than 2 minutes.
Speeches must be written by the contestants themselves.
   
6 APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

One contestant for each category from each elementary school can apply, plus two alternates.

DEADLINE:
Applications must be faxed to arrive by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010.

SELECTION OF CONTESTANTS:
  We will accept one student for each category from each school on a first-come, first-served basis until we have 10 contestants. In addition, each school may submit one student for each category for the alternate list. If there are fewer than 10 contestants for each category, the Speech Contest Committee will fill the spaces with students from the alternates list. Selection from the alternates list, in principle, will be based upon the total number of Japanese language students per school.
   
9 AWARDS:
  Awardees: special trophy and certificate.
All participants: trophy, certificate and gift.
