Thirteen outstanding Japanese American leaders have been selected for the 2010 Japanese American Leadership Delegation Program (JALD) from ten cities throughout the United States. This year's Delegation will travel to three cities in Japan from February 26 to March 6, 2010
The program is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) and organized in cooperation with the U.S.-Japan Council. 2010 marks the 10 year anniversary of JALD.
The goals of JALD are to improve understanding and long-term relations between Japanese Americans and Japan and to develop on-going strategies to enhance the role of Japanese Americans in advancing U.S.-Japan relations. The delegation consists of leaders from various professional fields, including business, law, government, education, non-profit, and arts and culture. Participants are leaders who have demonstrated an interest in strengthening U.S.-Japan relations and are committed to building bridges between the Japanese American community and Japan.
This year's program will include a symposium organized by the CGP, featuring three of the delegation members as panelists, including Ms. Yanehiro from San Francisco. The trip's itinerary also includes meetings in Tokyo with high ranking political and business leaders and visits to the Kansai area.
From the San Francisco region, the following two leaders were selected as members of the delegation:
Jan Yanehiro
President, Jan Yanehiro, Inc.,
Jan Yanehiro is President of Jan Yanehiro, Inc., a strategic media and marketing planning firm. She is also a Founding Director of the School of Multimedia Communications at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a Board Member of the Bank of Marin. Previously, Ms. Yanehiro co-hosted “Evening Magazine,” a nightly program on KPIX TV (CBS). She has won many awards for the program, including an Emmy from the National Association of Television and Radio Artists and the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award from the United Nations of San Francisco, and she was a Silver Circle Inductee of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Ms. Yanehiro has also hosted several documentaries on the Japanese American experience during WWII. She is very active in the Japanese American community, serving on the boards of Kristi Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation, the N! Leadership Network, and the Osaka-San Francisco Sister City Association. Ms. Yanehiro received her B.A. from California State University, Fresno. Ms. Yanehiro’s ancestral origins are from Yamaguchi Prefecture in Japan.
Judy K. Sakaki
Vice President, Student Affairs, University of California
Judy Sakaki is the Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of California Office of the President. Dr. Sakaki oversees admissions, financial aid and campus life policy for undergraduate and graduate students on all 10 UC campuses. She is one of the highest ranking Japanese American women in 4-year higher education administration in the country. Previously she served as Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at UC Davis and Vice President of Student Affairs at California State University, Fresno. Dr. Sakaki was also an American Council on Education Fellow and a founding board member of Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education. Dr. Sakaki would like to use her knowledge, network and experience to educate and influence others about Japan and Japanese Americans.
