Reischauer Scholars Program: "Japan Day" celebrated to honor two Reischauer Scholars Back

"Japan Day," a special program to honor two distinguished participants in the 2010 Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP) was held at Stanford University on Monday, August 16, 2010. The two honorees are Rachel Waltman from New Jersey and Jiyoon Lee from North Carolina. The RSP is an internet-based special distant-learning program to nurture select American high school students in the area of Japanese history, politics, economy, culture, etc. with lectures by top scholars and diplomats from both Japan and the United States. The RSP was created and run by Stanford Program on International and Cross-cultural Education (SPICE). Since its inception in 2003, so far nearly 150 students have completed the program.

At the program, Acting Consul General Hideyuki Mitsuoka congratulated this year's RSP participants including the two award recipients on their great accomplishment in his remarks while expressing his sincere hope that those RSP students who chose to study about Japan at the informative age would continue to pursue their interest to play an important role in building bridges between the United States and Japan in the future. Professor Emeritus Daniel Okimoto of Stanford University, then, gave a lecture on ¡ÈJapan¡Çs Third Crisis¡É presenting his analysis on Japan¡Çs current socio-economic situation.

At the Japan Day, two top RSP students selected based on their academic works, class participation and final essay are invited to receive an honor and to make presentation on their final essay. This year's honorees, Rachel Waltman talked about ¡ÈThe Changing Status of Women in the Workplace in Japan,¡É and Jiyoon Lee about ¡ÈAn Inconvenient Truth: the U.S. Censorship of the Atomic Bomb.¡É The program was attended by about 30 guests including the honorees and the parents, RSP lecturers including Professor Emeritus Okimoto and Professor Philip Lipscy, Mr. Gary Mukai, SPICE Director and Ms. Naomi Funahashi, RSP Coordinator.
