On July 17th, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco hosted a sendoff reception for 32 high school students who were selected for "The JET Memorial Invitation Program for U.S. High School Students" organized by the Japan Foundation. Those students are going to Osaka from San Francisco and will stay in Japan from July 19th to 28th. Japanese language teachers and Alumni of JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program were in attendance.
At the reception, Consul General Inomata expressed his deep gratitude toward Ms. Anderson and Mr. Dickson for embracing Japan and its people and contributing in furthering the relationships between the U.S. and Japan. Also, with words of encouragement, he asked the participants to learn not only about the Japanese language and culture first-hand but also how the country has been doing after the earthquake through their own experiences, share these experiences with people in the U.S. upon their return, and play a role in supporting the friendship between the two countries.
Afterwards, in her speech, Ms. Kim-Shree Maufas, Commissioner of the San Francisco Board of Education expressed her gratitude that American high school students are given the opportunity to visit Japan, and asked the students to share the message with Japanese people that Americans are supporting and thinking about them.
As a representative of the participants, Mr. Thomas Cude from Virginia gave a speech and mentioned, "I am grateful for such a great opportunity to go to Japan and learn about the language and culture. I know there are a number of high school students who applied and wished to participate in the program. As a representative of those students, I would like to learn as much as possible and give back after program."
32 high school students shared their goals during their stay in Japan and ambitions in learning Japanese with guests who attended the reception.
