The front lobby of the Japan Information Center (JIC) contains a public space for the use of our guests. In our public space, an area has been set aside for the display of seasonal artwork on Japan-related themes by local artists. Past examples of artwork exhibited in our public space have included photography, shibori, earthenware, and Japanese calligraphy. For more information on this exhibit area, please visit OUR ART SPACE.
Located in our public space you will find some of Japan's major newspapers such as the Asahi Shimbun and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun in Japanese, and the Japan Times and Asahi Shimbun in English. The English newspapers based in Japan are considered valuable resources for current issues concerning Japan and Asia, and each Monday edition of the Japan Times features an extensive classified section of jobs available in Japan. Located in our public space you will also find some of the more popular magazines and periodicals in Japanese and English such as Aera, Shukan Asahi and Kateigaho as well as the ever popular Nipponia. You will also find information on Japanese universities and English language schools in the San Francisco Bay area as well as free brochures and pamphlets on Japan and Japanese culture.
The Japan Information Center maintains a LIBRARY with a collection of over 1,300 books in both English and Japanese on most major topics including; Japanese society, economy, psychology, art, history, language, music, dance, literature and politics. Included in the collection are numerous reference works such as the ten-volume Kodansha Encyclopedia which is very useful for quick reference on practically any subject related to Japan. The library also contains numerous governmental and non-governmental PUBLICATIONS such as the White Papers on Japan which offer the latest in-depth statistical research and information on issues including crime, education, environment, defense tourism, transportation, science and technology.
The purpose of the JIC is to assist individuals who want to know more about Japanese traditions, customs, history, contemporary culture and current issues.
