| The 39th Annual Japanese Speech Contest |

The Japanese American Association of Northern California (Hokka Nichi Bei Kai) and the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco are proud to co-sponsor the 39th annual Japanese Speech Contest this November at San Francisco State University.
The primary objective of this contest is to encourage the learning and use of the Japanese language in our community, particularly among non-native speakers. This speech contest represents a fun and challenging way for students at all levels to demonstrate their language and communications skills.

Middle and High School Student Division |
 |
Applicants must be middle or high school students currently studying Japanese who have not lived in Japan for more than 12 consecutive months after the age of 6. |
 |
The contestants will be divided into two categories: contestants who come from homes where Japanese is not spoken regularly (Japanese is neither spoken nor understood in the contestant¡Çs family) and contestants who come from homes where Japanese is spoken regularly (Somebody understands Japanese or is able to speak Japanese in the contestant¡Çs family). |

Previous first prize winners are not eligible to enter the contest. |

Each school may submit one candidate and one alternate candidate to the speech contest. |

Applications for this division should be submitted by Japanese language instructors on behalf of their students. Completed applications for this division should be submitted to the Consulate General of Japan attn: John Charlton, Education Coordinator.

College Student and Adult Division |
 |
Applicants must be: 1. U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States, 2. current college students or adults over 18 years of age and 3. someone who has not lived in Japan for more than 2 consecutive years since the age of 6. |

Previous first prize winners are not eligible for entry. |
