 ASSISTANT LANGUAGE TEACHER (ALT)

photoALTs are usually placed in public schools or local boards of education, and participate in team teaching with Japanese teachers of English. Over 90% of the Program's participants are ALTs, and they play an important role in promoting internationalization and English language education in Japan.
Japanese language ability is recommended, but NOT required for this position!

 COORDINATOR FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (CIR)

photoCIRs are engaged in a wide variety of international activities including advising on the planning and implementation of international exchange programs; assisting with language instruction and exchange activities among local residents; and receiving guests from abroad. Some CIR participants are placed in the offices of prefectural governments or of designated city governments. Other CIRs are sometimes placed in the municipal government offices of non-designated cities, towns, villages or other entities throughout Japan.
Applicants for this position must have a functional command of the Japanese language.

JET PARTICIPANT MAIN DUTIES

 Typical ALT Duties

ALT duties may vary in emphasis and content from one location to another, so please note that any particular ALT's duties MAY include any or all of the following:

 Team-teach with Japanese foreign language teachers in junior and senior high schools.
 Assist in foreign language education at primary and elementary schools.
 Assist in the preparation of supplementary teaching materials.
 Assist with language training for Japanese foreign language teachers.
 Assist with school foreign language clubs.
 Share language and culture knowledge with Teachers' Consultants, Japanese
 foreign language teachers and others.
 Assist with or help judge at foreign language speech contests.
 Engage in local international exchange activities.
 Other duties as specified by the host institution.

 Typical CIR Duties

CIR duties vary greatly in emphasis and content from one location to another, so please note that any particular CIR's duties MAY include any or all of the following:

 Assist with editing, translating, and compiling pamphlets into a foreign language.
 Assist in planning, designing and implementing international exchange programs.
 Assist in hosting of official guests from abroad and interpreting at events for overseas visitors or for local foreign community residents.
 Assist in language instruction of local employees and residents.
 Assist with sister-city/state relations.
 Assist with regional internationalization efforts.
 Prefectural advisor for local JETs.
 Other duties as specified by the host institution.
