Assistant for Economic Affairs (Agriculture, Transportation, High-Speed Rail) Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco

The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco has an opening for a full-time assistant in its Economic Affairs Section, with an expected start date in January 2018. The responsibilities for this section are broad, but include facilitating government, trade and business relations between Japan and the United States.


The Economic Affairs Assistant is responsible for providing administrative support to three Consuls, who are collectively in charge of agriculture, food, health, tourism, labor, transportation (including high-speed rail), infrastructure, maritime and legal affairs.


  • Researching and informing the Consuls on current issues and events
  • Attending meeting/conference with Consuls
  • Occasionally translating emails or documents between Japanese and English
  • Drafting and editing speeches, letters and informative documents
  • Scheduling meetings and appointments
  • Handling various administrative and clerical tasks
  • Coordinating and managing several annual events


A candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. degree
  • Professional manner
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Strong internet based research abilities
  • Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to adapt and show flexibility
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with Japanese culture and values
  • (Recommended) Ability to understand written and spoken Japanese and translate it into English
