The 45th Annual Japanese Speech Contest

The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco, in partnership with the Japanese American Association of Northern California (Hokka Nichibei Kai) and the Northern California Japanese Teachers’ Association, is proud to present the 45th Annual Japanese Speech Contest this November at the JCCCNC located in San Francisco’s Japantown.

The primary objective of this contest is to encourage the learning and use of the Japanese language in our community, particularly among non-native speakers. This speech contest represents a fun and challenging way for students at all levels to demonstrate their language and communications skills. This event is free and open to the public.

Middle School and High School Student Division

ELIGIBILITY

An eligible contest participant must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Is a middle or high school student currently studying Japanese as a foreign language
  2. Has not lived in Japan for more than 12 consecutive months after the age of six
  3. Has NOT previously won first prize in the Middle School and High School Student Division of this contest

CATEGORIES

Contestants will be divided into the following two categories:
Category 1: Contestants who come from homes where Japanese is not spoken (i.e., there are no members of the contestant’s family who understand or speak Japanese).
Category 2: Contestants who come from homes where Japanese is spoken (i.e., there are members of the contestant’s family who understand or speak Japanese). This point applies to both native and non-native speakers of Japanese.

HOW TO APPLY

Each school may submit one (1) candidate and two (2) alternate candidates to the speech contest.
Applications for this division should be submitted by Japanese language instructors or school teachers on behalf of their students by e-mail to: mariko.takei@sr.mofa.go.jp, no later than 5:00pm on Friday, October 12th, 2018.

1st Place: Winner’s trophy and certificate of achievement
2nd Place: 2nd place trophy and certificate of achievement

College Student and Adult Division

ELIGIBILITY

An eligible contest participant must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States, or who has a valid U.S. visa
  2. Is a current college student, or an adult over 18 years of age
  3. Has not lived in Japan for more than two (2) consecutive years since the age of six
  4. Has NOT previously received first prize in the College Student and Adult Division of this contest

HOW TO APPLY

Please download required documents below. Completed forms should be submitted by e-mail to: mariko.takei@sr.mofa.go.jp, no later than 5:00pm on Friday, October 12th, 2018.
