New Year’s Reception
2017/1/20

On Wednesday, January 18, Consul General Jun Yamada hosted a New Year’s celebration at his official residence. Approximately 290 guests were in attendance.
The program began with Consul General Yamada’s New Year’s speech. During his remarks, Consul General Yamada presented a commendation to Kagami Kai, a volunteer organization which teaches traditional Japanese culture, in recognition of their longstanding contributions in fostering an exchange of culture between Japan and the US through mochi-tsuki (ceremonial rice-pounding demonstration). Next, the kagami biraki (ceremonial opening of the sake cask) was conducted, followed by a toast delivered by Mr. Kenichi Sato, President of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California.
Throughout the residence, beautiful ikebana flower arrangements from the Sogetsu School were on display, and on the residence terrace, a mochi-tsuki was performed by Kagami Kai. Guests were also able to enjoy osechi ryori (special Japanese New Year’s dishes) throughout the evening.
