On Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10, J-POP SUMMIT Festival 2017 was held in San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center.

J-POP IDOL! Team Karaoke Face-Off 2017 “Aqua vs. Pink” Finals (Sunday, September 10)


The Consulate jointly presented the J-POP Idol Karaoke Contest to encourage Japanese language education amongst local youth interested in Japanese. Finalists selected through online video preliminaries were divided into two teams, Aqua and Pink, and participated in onstage finals. Though the competition was quite close, TEAM PINK was crowned the winner and were awarded certificates of merit by Consul Ichioka, Director of the Japan Information and Cultural Center at the consulate.

Traditional Music Performances (Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10)


The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco partnered with Bachido Shamisen (Saturday, September 9) and the Kinuko Mototake Okinawa Dance Academy and the Okinawa Eisa Shima Daiko Drummers (Sunday, September 10) to present special performances of traditional Japanese music as a part of the JapanKuru Travel Pavilion Stage lineup, highlighting the rich traditions that still thrive in modern Japan.

Japan Information Booth (Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10)


The Consulate held an information booth with materials and staff to promote Japanese culture, tourism, the JET Program and study abroad. The popular robot seal, Paro, also helped to greet attendees.
