On Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15, The Consulate General of Japan, in partnership with Grain Theory Kendama, and the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival held the 4th Sakura Classic Kendama Contest during the first weekend of the 51st Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco’s Japantown. Throughout the weekend, amateur players of all ages and skills visited the kendama booth to participate in the contest’s preliminary rounds. Professional Kendama players also performed during the finals, held on the evening of Sunday, April 15. More than 2,000 people participated and watched the preliminary and final rounds of the contest over the two days and learn about this traditional Japanese toy.
