Presentation: Osamu Tezuka and Astro Boy: Creating the Framework for the Modern Manga and Anime Industries

The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco, is proud to present a special lecture by Mr. Frederik L. Schodt at the 2018 San Francisco Comic Con to be held at the Oakland Convention Center on June 10th.

Using extensive visuals, Fred will give a crash course on Osamu Tezuka, one of the primary innovators of Japanese manga and animation. Focusing on Tezuka’s most popular and iconic work, Tetsuwan Atomu (known in English as Mighty Atom, or Astro Boy), he will show how Tezuka created the framework for the modern manga and anime industries, and contributed greatly to the global popularity they enjoy today.

Frederik L. Schodt is a veteran writer, translator, and interpreter in the San Francisco Bay Area. For his work introducing Japan’s popular culture to the world, he has won many awards in both Japan and the U.S.
