On Sunday, March 3, Consul General Uyama attended the opening ceremony of the 2019 Iwabuchi Cup Memorial Karate Tournament hosted by the US Hakua Kai Karate Do at San Mateo High School in San Mateo. Consul General Uyama greeted the participants and spoke about the important role Karate plays in fostering new bonds of international understanding. Over 200 karate students from around the United States and abroad competed in the tournament. The event was attended by actor and karate master Fumio Demura, San Mateo Mayor Gina Papan, and members of the community.
