Announcement: The 52nd Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival

The 52nd Annual Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival will be held on the weekends of April 13-14 and 20-21 in San Francisco Japantown. Every year, over 200,000 people visit the festival, making it one of the largest festivals of its kind in the United States. The festival will also feature sights, sounds, and flavors of Japan for the visitors of all ages.
The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco will be partnering with the festival to hold several Japanese culture-related events.

(1) The 5th Sakura Classic Northern California Kendama Championship

Once again, the Consulate General of Japan will be partnering with Kendama organizations Grain Theory and Kengarden to present the fifth “Sakura Classic” Northern California Kendama Championship on the first weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14 during the Cherry Blossom Festival. Finals will be held on the Peace Plaza Stage from 4:15PM to 5:00PM on Sunday, April 10. Kendama is a traditional Japanese ball-and-cup toy that has recently seen a boom in both America and Japan with innovative and expressive tricks and styles.

(2) Yosakoi Showcase

The Consulate will be partnering with Ito Yosakoi to present a special performance by five Yosakoi dance groups from across the United States on the second Saturday of the Festival, April 20. Yosakoi is a lively Japanese dance style that originated in Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku.

(3) Consulate Information Booth
The Consulate General of Japan will hold an information booth throughout both weekends with information on travel in Japan, Japanese culture, the JET Program, and more.
