The 52nd Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival Second Weekend

On April 20 and 21, the second weekend of the 52nd Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival was held in San Francisco’s Japantown. Consul General Uyama attended the Friendship Reception (Friday, April 19), the Taru Mikoshi purification ceremony (Saturday, April 20), and the Senior Appreciation Brunch (Sunday, April 21). Additionally, the Festival held a special showcase featuring Yosakoi dancing on Saturday, April 20.
1) Friendship Reception


On Friday, April 19, Consul General Uyama and Mrs. Uyama attended the Friendship Reception, a welcome reception for Festival performers and guests visiting from Japan and outside Northern California. The Consul General gave remarks, commenting on the good will fostered by the Festival.
2) Taru Mikoshi Purification Ceremony


On Saturday, April 20, Consul General Uyama attended a purification ceremony for the San Francisco Taru Mikoshi, the portable shrine carried in the Grand Parade.
3) Yosakoi Showcase


On Saturday, April 20, a special Yosakoi dancing performance was held on the Peace Plaza stage. Five groups from around the United States gathered under the name “Kazanami” to perform this special style of dance that originated in Kochi Prefecture.
4) Senior Appreciation Brunch


On Sunday, April 21, Consul General Uyama and Mrs. Uyama attended the annual Senior Appreciation Brunch which honors senior citizens and their contributions to the Japanese American community. During the ceremony, Consul General Uyama presented a special award to the eight individuals and one organization.
