On Saturday, May 11, the Japan Coast Guard Academy training ship Kojima arrived in San Francisco. The Kojima is currently on a 3-month deep sea training voyage with new officer candidates, and was welcomed into port by Consul General Uyama, members of the Japanese American community, local students, and a performance by Eden Aoba Taiko.

On Monday, May 13, the crew and cadets of the Kojima held an onboard reception for their US Coast Guard (USCG) counterparts and the local community. Kojima Captain Tonozaki, USCG Pacific Area Commander Vice Admiral Linda Fagan, and Consul General Uyama gave remarks of appreciation to the assembled guests.
