On May 21, 2019 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the recipients of the 2019 Spring Conferment of Japanese Decorations.

Ms. Fusako Hoyrup, who resides within the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco’s jurisdiction will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays.

Summary of Contributions

Ms. Hoyrup founded the California branch of the Wafu School of Ikebana in 1970 and has served as its president for nearly 50 years. Under her leadership, the Wafu School of Ikebana holds exhibitions and demonstrations, actively promoting Ikebana and Japanese culture in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as across the United States and abroad.

Ms. Hoyrup established classes to teach about Ikebana in the public adult education system in the South Bay Area in 1969 and has been leading them to this day, creating opportunities for a diverse range of students to learn about Japanese culture in their own community.

Ms. Hoyrup has served in leadership and advisory positions for the interdisciplinary ikebana organizations Ikebana International and the Ikebana Teachers’ Federation, further contributing to the education and spread of Ikebana and promoting cultural exchange between Japan and the United States.
