On Saturday, August 24, Consul General Uyama delivered congratulatory remarks at a town hall meeting hosted by Congressman Ro Khanna in Sunnyvale to celebrate the posthumous awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal Award to Mr. Shunso Frank Watanabe for his service in the Military Intelligent Service during World War II. Since Mr. Watanabe passed away on June 18, 2019 (the same day that the Congressman’s office received confirmation that he would be receiving the award), Ms. Alysa Sakkas, a daughter of Mr. Watanabe and the President of Cupertino Toyokawa Sister Cities, Inc., and other family members of Mr. Watanabe received the medal from the Congressman on his behalf.
