On October 19, 2019, Consul General Tomochika Uyama attended the 2019 AKI MATSURI held in San Francisco Japantown and gave remarks on the Peace Plaza stage. This event was organized by the San Francisco Japan Center Malls, in partnership with multiple community and cultural organizations, including the Consulate. Following the Consul General’s speech, SF Human Services Commissioner George Yamasaki, Jr was recognized by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for his long-standing service to the Japantown community with a certificate presented by Supervisor Vallie Brown.

Aki Matsuri attendees enjoyed a variety of performances on two stages, capped by taiko performances from both San Jose Taiko and San Francisco Taiko Dojo. During the festival, the Consulate held a one-day pop up gallery exhibition of select entries to its annual “Once in Japan” Photo Contest, attracting over 400 visitors. The Consulate also held an info booth in Peace Plaza with information on Japanese culture, tourism, and the JET Program.
