Emperor’s Birthday Celebration

On Wednesday, February 26, Consul General MAEDA Toru hosted a reception at his official residence in celebration of the Emperor of Japan’s birthday on February 23. More than 240 guests were in attendance, including leaders of California from various fields, representatives from the local Japanese community, and members of the Consular Corps.
In his remarks, Consul General Maeda, mentioning the 150th anniversary of the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco later this year in 2020, acknowledged the strong relationship and history between Japan and Northern California, and stated his aspirations to working with the many organizations and individuals enhancing and strengthening that bond.
The Honorable Eleni Kounalakis, Lieutenant Governor of California gave remarks about this historic relationship between Japan and California, and the program was concluded with a toast from the Honorable Buffy Wicks, California State Assemblymember.
Special stations promoting the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Shinkansen (Japanese High-Speed Rail), and tourism to local areas in Japan were on display throughout the residence. Guests also enjoyed a variety of Japanese cuisine, including Onigiri (Japanese rice balls) made with Japanese Koshihikari rice grown in Toyama Prefecture.
