Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Award Ceremony

On Friday, February 26, Ms. Junko Tanaka, a Japanese language teacher at Clarendon Elementary School in San Francisco, was awarded the Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Award at an online award ceremony. For her contributions to the Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program, a program to teach Japanese language and culture at Clarendon, and for her commitment to promoting cultural diversity and social justice education in the classroom, she was honored with this award. At the online award ceremony, Deputy Consul General Higuchi delivered congratulatory remarks.
Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Award Ceremony was started in 2001; named after Mr. Elgin Heinz, a local educator who had dedicated himself to teaching about Asia in San Francisco for more than forty years. The award has been presented to forty-one outstanding teachers who had contributed to humanitarian activities and the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the United States. The award was administered by the United States-Japan Foundation until 2019, and is now run by a non-profit organization, Engage Asia.
