On Monday, January 30, the Consulate General of Japan hosted “A Traditional Spirit for the Modern Age”, an event featuring Awamori, a traditional distilled spirit from Okinawa, at Sushi Ran in Sausalito for members of the Bay Area food and beverage industry.

Participants were treated to a demonstration of unique Awamori-based cocktails from acclaimed mixologists Kevin Diedrich of Pacific Cocktail Haven and Christian Suzuki-Orellana (SUZU) of Wildhawk, and a discussion led by professional Wine, Sake, and Spirits Judge and Journalist, Eduardo Dingler.

In Consul General Noguchi’s remarks, he noted that the value of alcoholic beverage exports from Japan to the U.S. reached a record high last year, and he expressed his hope that Awamori will become even more popular when combined with the culinary flavors of the region.
