Benkyodo Documentary Screening & Consul General’s Commendation
2023/5/15

On Friday, May 12, Consul General Noguchi attended a screening of documentary film "Benkyodo: The Last Manju Shop in J-Town" at Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC), co-sponsored by JCCCNC and the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM). On this occasion, Consul General Noguchi presented the Consul General's Commendation to Benkyodo, which dedicated 115 years to making mochi and Japanese sweets in San Francisco's Japantown. The event also included a panel discussion between the documentary's filmmakers and Benkyodo representatives.
Benkyodo was opened in San Francisco Japantown by the Okamura family in 1906, shortly after the earthquake, and lasted for 115 years over three generations of Okamura owners. Benkyodo's mochi was so popular that people formed long lines every day, but with no successor, it closed its business on March 31, 2022 as the oldest store in Japantown at the time.
