2023/12/20

On Thursday, December 14, Consul General and Mrs. Osumi attended Clarendon Alternative Elementary School’s Performing Arts Night (PAN), celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program (JBBP). Consul General expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the dedicated teachers, parents, and members of the Clarendon community. In recognition, the Consul General presented a certificate of appreciation to acknowledge Clarendon’s efforts to promote friendly relations between Japan and the United States through its education of Japanese language and culture to the local community over the past five decades. Principal Carrie Maloney accepted the certificate on the school’s behalf.
The PAN event is an annual event where Clarendon JBBP students of all grades play the taiko drums and perform Japanese songs chosen by the program’s music teacher. Clarendon JBBP began its 50th anniversary celebrations with the 2022 PAN event and is closing out the anniversary year with the 2023 PAN event.
San Francisco’s JBBP began in 1973 with an original goal of preserving Japanese language and cultural education for the city’s Japanese American community and has since evolved to serve a diverse student body reflective of the current community.
