2024 New Year’s Cocktail Reception

On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Consul General Osumi hosted 2024 New Year’s Cocktail Reception at his official residence.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Consul General Osumi expressed his condolences to those who lost their lives in the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred in Japan on New Year's Day, and expressed his sympathy to those who lost their family members and acquaintances and to those who were affected by the disaster.
In his remarks, Consul General Osumi reflected the past year and touched on the APEC Leaders Meeting held last November. He spoke on the visit of the Japanese delegation, including Prime Minister Kishida and Foreign Minister Kamikawa, and their interactions with Japanese Americans across generations, their participation in the exchange of views with Japanese living in the United States, their attendance at the opening ceremony of the Japan Innovation Campus, Prime Minister Kishida and the President of South Korea’s visit to Stanford University, and their attendance at a Japanese marine products promotion event.
Consul General Osumi also mentioned this year’s five main goals: first, to thoroughly provide consular and other services to Japanese living in the United States as well as to strengthen communication; second, to maintain and strengthen ties with Japanese Americans, especially between Japanese American and Japanese living in the United States; third, to empower the younger generation; fourth, to broaden and deepen our circle of friends, including the promotion of sister city relationships and ties within the Asian communities in the region; fifth, to support Japanese business and Japanese company-related activities that will strengthen Japan's economic, technological, and soft power.
Consul General Osumi concluded his remarks by introducing Waka poems by His Majesty the Emperor, Her Majesty the Empress, and Her Imperial Highness Princess Aiko, as well as a Waka poem by Ms. Haruko Kawasaki of California from this year's Ceremony of the Utakai Hajime (Imperial New Year's Poetry Reading).
The toast was given by Mr. Nobuyuki Baba, President of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California (JCCNC). The official residence was decorated with beautiful flower arrangements by Ikenobo Ikebana. Chef Igawa also prepared osechi-ryori (Japanese New Year’s cuisine) so the guests could enjoy the atmosphere of the Japanese New Year.
