On Wednesday, February 7, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco partnered with the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California (JCCNC) to present a webinar on hydrogen energy development in Japan and California. The program was aimed at connecting California organizations working in the hydrogen space with their counterparts in the Japanese government and private sector. Consul General Osumi addressed an audience of about 250 participants, speaking about the importance of continuing joint hydrogen energy projects between Japan and California.

California State Senator Bob Archuleta gave remarks on the current state of hydrogen development in California. Other speakers from the California side included Mr. Tyson Eckerle, Senior Advisor for Clean Infrastructure & Mobility at the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz); Mr. Michael DiBernardo, Deputy Executive Director of Marketing and Customer Relations at the Port of Los Angeles; and Dr. Jimmy Chen, Managing Director of Stanford Energy Corporate Affiliates (SECA). The speakers detailed ongoing projects to develop a hydrogen hub in the state.

Presenters from the Japan side included Mr. Masashi Morimoto, Director General of New Energy and Technology Development Organization (NEDO); Ms. Yoshiko Tsuwaki, Executive Director of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO LA); and Mr. Takehiro Yokoo, the 1st Chairperson of JH2F Hydrogen Forum. These experts discussed Japan’s multi-decade history of hydrogen investment. Two Q & A sessions were held during the webinar for audience members.
