The Kojima Visits San Francisco and Signing of Letter of Intention for Cooperation between the U.S., Japan, and Korea Coast Guard

On Wednesday, May 8, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) Academy training ship Kojima arrived in San Francisco. The Kojima is currently on a 3-month deep sea voyage with new officer candidates, and was welcomed into port by Deputy Consul General Kishimori, members of the Japanese American community, and United States Coast Guard (USCG) officers.

The Kojima’s arrival coincides with the signing of a trilateral agreement to expand cooperation between the Coast Guards of Japan, Korea, and the United States. Japan Coast Guard Vice Commandant Yasunori Watanabe added his signature alongside US Coast Guard Pacific Area Commander Tiongson and the Deputy Consul General of Korea in San Francisco.

On Thursday, May 9, the Kojima hosted an on-board reception bringing together counterparts from the USCG and members of the local and international community. Kojima Captain Kazushi Sakae , Vice Admiral Tiongson, Vice Admiral Watanabe, and Consul General Osumi gave remarks of appreciation to the assembled guests. Visitors also enjoyed cultural demonstrations, and were entertained by a performance featuring the crew of the Kojima.

On Saturday, May 11, cadets held a tour of the Kojima for members of the public. Later that day crew members ventured to Alameda to tour the USS Hornet Museum and Nisei Veterans’ Exhibit, including a guided history of the US Army 442nd Regimental Combat Team by Friends and Family of Nisei Veterans (FFNV) volunteer docents.

The Kojima left port on Tuesday, May 14, joined by cadets from the US Coast Guard Academy who will accompany their Japanese counterparts on the way to the next port call in Honolulu. This will be the final training voyage for the Kojima, which will be retiring from deep sea service after returning to Japan. We look forward to welcoming its successor, JCG Itsukushima, in the years to come!
