On Thursday, May 30, Consul General Osumi and his wife attended Rosa Parks Elementary School’s Farewell Ceremony for their Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program (JBBP). 20 graduating 5th grade students were bid farewell by 150 of their K-4th grade peers and teachers.
Consul General gave congratulatory remarks where he commended the graduating students for their achievements and recognized their efforts in studying Japanese. He also expressed his gratitude for the JBBP teachers and community for their devoted efforts to teach Japanese language and culture to their students.
Last year marked the 50th Anniversary of the JBBP program at Rosa Parks Elementary School. San Francisco’s JBBP began in 1973 with an original goal of preserving Japanese language and cultural education for the city’s Japanese American community and has since evolved to serve a diverse student body reflective of the current community.
