Japan Bowl Teams Commendation at the Santa Clara County

On Monday, June 3, Consul General Osumi attended the Santa Clara County Ceremonial Meeting where the Japan Bowl teams from Lynbrook High School (District 4), Cupertino High School (District 5) and Henry M. Gunn High School (District 5)were recognized for their achievements in the 32nd National Japan Bowl in Washington D.C.

Each of the Japan Bowl teams from all three schools placed within the top 5 at each level during this year’s competition, making it a Santa Clara County schools’ sweep.

Santa Clara County District 4 Supervisor Susan Ellenberg recognized the three high schools and awarded Lynbrook High School a commendation for placing first in two of the three levels in the Japan Bowl. A student representative and the Japanese Language teacher spoke about their experiences at the Japan Bowl and their passion for learning Japanese. Consul General gave remarks as a supporter of Japanese Language Education, congratulating the students on their achievements and commending them on their efforts in studying Japanese.

Following the Ceremonial Meeting, the students were presented with a Certificate of Achievement by Consul General Osumi and a US-Japan flag pin badge to showcase that they are symbols of friendship between the United States and Japan. District 5 Supervisor Joe Simitian awarded each individual from Cupertino High School and Gunn High School with Certificates.

The National Japan Bowl Competition is one of the largest quiz bowl competitions on Japanese language and culture in the United States. It is held every year in spring in Washington D.C. and was created by the Japan-America Society of Washington D.C.
