2024/7/15

On Saturday, July 13, Acting Consul General Kishimori attended the first day of the 2024 San Jose Obon festival held in San Jose Japantown. Speaking at a program which included San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez, Acting Consul General Kishimori thanked the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin for their continuing successful organizing of the event, and recognized San Jose Japantown for its significant role as a hub for Japanese and Japanese American culture and community in the South Bay.
Over 1700 dancers participated in obon dancing on Saturday with many others watching. Attendees also enjoyed a variety of food including imagawayaki and teriyaki, activities, and performances, including those by San Jose Taiko and a number of collegiate taiko groups from across California.
Obon is an annual Japanese Buddhist tradition when people remember those who have passed away and honor them with communal dancing in a large circle.
