On Thursday, January 9, Deputy Consul General Ishihara attended the San Francisco Japantown Foundation’s annual Osechi Ryori event in San Francisco Japantown. This event featured chefs from area restaurants offering Japanese New Year’s dishes collectively known as osechi ryori, which are full of symbols of good luck and fortune for the coming year.
Guests, including San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood were entertained by a variety of cultural performances, including a mochitsuki (rice cake-making) demonstration by Kagami-kai.
For the event, the Consulate’s executive chef, Chef Munetaka Igawa prepared and served the traditional new year soup ozoni, which contains mochi, or glutinous rice cakes, symbolizing longevity in Japanese culture.
