Webinar: Developments in China and Japan-China-U.S. Relations
2025/2/18

On Wednesday, January 15, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco and Stanford University’s Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) co-hosted an online lecture by Tokyo Woman’s Christian University Visiting Professor Akio Takahara on Developments in China and Japan-China-U.S. Relations.
Introduced by moderator and APARC Deputy Director and Japan Program Director Kiyoteru Tsutsui, Consul General Yo Osumi gave welcome remarks noting that the Japan-U.S. alliance remains important amid growing interest in U.S.-China relations under the new Trump administration, and that the leaders of Japan and China confirmed that the two countries will continue to comprehensibly promote a “Mutually Beneficial Relationship Based on Common Strategic Interests”.
In his presentation, Professor Takahara indicated that:
1. The economic downturn and growing social issues in China are major challenges for the Xi Jinping administration.
2. China places importance on (i) stabilizing relations with the United States, (ii) supporting Russia, (iii) stabilizing relations with Europe and Japan, and (iv) winning over the so-called global south in order to win its strategic competition with the United States.
3. Japan will continue to further emphasize the importance of its alliance with the United States.
Next, discussant APARC Fellow Thomas Fingar commented on China’s domestic issues and foreign policy, with the event concluding with a Q&A session.
