On Monday, February 3, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco hosted a roundtable discussion at the Consul General’s residence for PIs (principal investigators) in the Bay Area who are part of a joint initiative to help support Japanese international students in the US. This event was held in cooperation with the JSPS San Francisco Office as well as Science and Technology Fellow and Associate Professor Kazuhito Morioka (University of California, San Francisco). The discussion centered on international information exchanges, youth human resource development in Japan, and deepening exchanges among researchers active in the Bay Area.

The event began with opening remarks from Consul General Yo Osumi, followed by a presentation on the Consulate’s efforts to build a network of Japanese PIs in the Bay Area. In addition, Dr. Motoko Kotani, Science and Technology Co-Advisor to the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, also gave a presentation on recent developments in science and tech diplomacy.

After a lively roundtable discussion on how PIs can more effectively support Japanese students in Bay Area, guests enjoyed a networking reception.
