2025/3/10

On Wednesday, March 5, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco held the U.S.-Japan Dual-Use Tech Seminar, in cooperation with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Northern California (JCCNC). With an audience of about 100 people, the event shined a spotlight on technology with both military and civilian applications. This seminar, held at the Japan Innovation Campus in Palo Alto, aimed to promote collaboration in the dual-use tech industry, with each speaker introducing the latest industry trends and the current status of Japan-US dual-use tech collaboration.
The event began with opening remarks from Consul General Yo Osumi, followed by a keynote presentation from Derek Kenmotsu, Senior Advisor of Global Partnerships at the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). Mr. Kenmotsu presented on the current activities of DIU, including a partnership with Japan’s Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency (ALTA) to encourage global dual-use tech development. Afterwards, John Christopher Moran, Vice President at Lockheed Martin Ventures, gave a presentation on the company’s partnerships with startups and opportunities for Japanese companies amid ongoing shifts in the geopolitical landscape. Mr. Kenmotsu and Mr. Moran then participated in a panel discussion with Mr. Kazuhiro Gomi, President of both JCCNC and NTT Research, where they discussed dual-use tech collaboration between the US and Japan.
Later, there were presentations from representatives of both US dual-use tech startups, Rhombus Power and Skyways, and Japanese companies, Innovation Core SEI, Inc., Chiptip Technologies, and BitBiome. Presentations covered cutting-edge solutions and applications in areas such as AI-powered visualization and analysis of military actions, unmanned aerial vehicles, cybersecurity for semiconductors, biodata sharing, and more.
Finally, visiting from Japan, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Director Shinjiro Takeda from the Innovation Policy Division, gave closing remarks. Guests then enjoyed a networking session where representatives from US and Japanese companies had opportunities to make new connections.
