On Wednesday, August 6, memorial events commemorating 80 years since of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were held across the Bay Area, with Consul General Yo Osumi and Deputy Consul General Takeshi Ishihara attending several of them.
Both Consul General Osumi and Deputy Consul General Ishihara paid tribute to the victims of the atomic bombings and other wartime tragedies, while emphasizing that Japan and the United States have overcome such painful history to build a strong relationship of friendship and goodwill.

Fresno Commemoration of 80 Years Since the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima


The Human Rights Coalition of the Central Valley held a ceremony commemorating 80 years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima at the Fresno State Peace Garden. Deputy Consul General Takeshi Ishihara, Honorary Consul of Japan in Fresno Joy Goto, and local community leaders attended the ceremony.

The City and County of San Francisco and the San Francisco Interfaith Council held a peace blessing ceremony at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park to commemorate 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Consul General Osumi, two hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors), members of the Japanese community, and representatives from several San Francisco organizations gathered to pray for peace.
“Paper Lanterns” Film Screening at Stanford University


A screening of the documentary "Paper Lanterns" was hosted by Stanford University's Center for East Asian Studies, the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE), and the US-Asia Technology Management Center. Deputy Consul General Takeshi Ishihara attended as a guest speaker.
The documentary introduced the history of twelve U.S. prisoners of war who were exposed to radiation from the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It documents the efforts of Mr. Shigeaki Mori, an atomic bomb survivor who spent more than 40 years searching for the bereaved families of these POWs in order to give them closure.

Cupertino-Toyokawa Sister Cities Bell-Ringing Ceremony


Cupertino-Toyokawa Sister Cities held a bell-ringing ceremony to mark 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the conventional bombing of Toyokawa on August 7, 1945. Deputy Consul General Takeshi Ishihara attended and gave remarks.
