On Saturday, October 11, the 16th Aki Matsuri was held at Waterstreet Plaza in Henderson Nevada by the Japanese Festival Association of Nevada (JFAN). Consul General Kotaro Otsuki joined the speakers ceremony, expressing his gratitude to JFAN for organizing the event and his appreciation for the performers, vendors, and attendees in celebrating Japanese culture. Congresswoman Dina Titus, Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero, and other Nevada State and local government representatives also spoke.
 
Aki Matsuri featured a full day and night of Japanese cultural performances, festival foods, and activities. The Consulate offered attendees a chance to learn and practice writing Japanese fall-themed vocabulary at its booth, as well as information on Japanese culture and travel, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program, and educational opportunities.

Sake Pavilion

Consul General Otsuki speaks during Sake Seminar
Presentation by “Sake Ninja” Chris Johnson
As part of this year’s Aki Matsuri, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco partnered with JFAN to hold the Sake Pavilion. Consul General Otsuki gave opening remarks to a special seminar led by Chris Johnson, Sake Ninja himself and certified Sake Samurai, sommelier, and expert. Mr. Johnson guided participants through different types of sake, the importance of key ingredients rice, water, yeast, and koji, as well as options for pairing sake with cuisine from around the world.
 
Later that afternoon, attendees aged 21+ were able to sample over 45 varieties of sake and sprits, including many products from Japan now available through U.S.-based retailers.
