“What’s Your Story” – Launch Event for the Bay Area Nikkei NextGen Steering Committee

On Thursday, December 4, a launch event was held at the Consul General’s residence, co-organized by the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco and the Bay Area Nikkei NextGen Steering Committee, in partnership with the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC). This event served as the launch for the Bay Area Nikkei NextGen Steering Committee, a recently formed group stemming from a Consulate initiative to strengthen connections between Japanese American young professionals with each other and with Japan.
 
In his welcome address, Consul General Kotaro Otsuki pledged his support to Nikkei NextGen and expressed hope that by connecting with each other, attendees would also be able to further explore and engage with their Japanese heritage. Additional remarks were given by Ms. Audrey Yamamoto, USJC President & CEO, who explained the significant role Japanese Americans can play at all levels of the Japan-U.S. relationship.
 
The keynote remarks were given by Ms. Natalie Nakase, Head Coach of the Golden State Valkyries WNBA team who expressed important lessons learned and challenges overcome through her path towards leadership. Mayor Adena Ishii of the City of Berkeley gave a toast on leadership and inspiring the next generations.
 
Attendees then formed smaller groups, and with a rotating group of intergenerational Japanese American speakers, discussed careers, leadership, community, and connections with Japan. Attendees dined on dishes prepared by Chef Igawa of the Consulate, onigiri from San Francisco Japantown’s Kissako Tea, and sweets from San Jose Japantown’s Shuei-Do. Beverages were provided by Takara Sake U.S.A., Inc; Pocari Sweat; and Ito-En.
