On Wednesday, February 4, Consul General Kotaro Otsuki and consulate staff attended Clarendon Alternative Elementary School’s annual Fred Korematsu Civil Rights Assembly.
In honor of Fred Korematsu, the civil rights activist who opposed Japanese American Incarceration during World War II, Clarendon Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program (JBBP) students perform a skit based on Korematsu’s life to learn about history and civil rights. Afterwards, class representatives interview Dale Minami, the lawyer who led the legal team to overturn the Korematsu’s conviction.
In 2010, the State of California set January 30 as Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution.
