1. SUMMARY OF OPEN POSITION

The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco has an opening for a full-time staff member in the Japan Information and Cultural Center (JICC). This position is in charge of overseeing all aspects of educational exchange between Japan and the Consulate’s jurisdiction of Northern and Central California and the entirety of Nevada.

In particular, duties would include:
  • Promoting and overseeing applications of the MEXT Japanese Scholarships
  • Responding to inquiries about studying abroad in Japan
  • Introducing Japan-related topics at schools in the Consulate’s jurisdiction through the Consulate’s educational programs and so on
  • Promoting Japanese language study and providing assistance for initiatives to support Japanese language education
  • Creating new relationships and continuing to build on existing relationships with Japanese language educators and other education-related contacts.
  • Providing relevant support and promotion of Japan-U.S. youth exchange and sports-related activities

The position also works as part of a team and is expected to assist with general JICC activities including (but not limited to): office work, support staff for public events, and responding to phone and e-mail inquiries (in English) as well as other activities of the Consulate as needed.

2. JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong interest in education exchange between the U.S. and Japan. Experience living in Japan long-term through study abroad or work (JET Program, etc.), or experience working in the education field preferred.
  • Knowledge of U.S. and California education policy and education system is not a must but a welcome addition.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills preferred
  • Ability to communicate and cooperate effectively with coworkers, external partners, and students of all ages.
  • Familiar with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) , and general office duties.
  • Native-level English required.
  • Strong written and spoken Japanese (able to read documents and answer telephone). JLPT N2 level or equivalent preferred.
  • Have authorization to work in the United States, and can provide proof of a valid Green Card if applicant does not have U.S. citizenship.

3. WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Employment will start in May 2026
  • Regular working hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays defined by the Consulate are nonworking days.
  • Working weekends or past 5:00 PM may be requested of staff by the office when necessary.
  • Occasional travel to different parts of Northern and Central California and Nevada for business trips (usually within regular working hours and transportation is provided).
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, and optional health insurance support are provided after the completion of a three-month probationary period.
  • Starting salary will be roughly 50,000 USD or more depending on experience.
