Seminar: International Deep Tech Networking Breakfast
2026/5/4
Deep tech event at Japan Innovation Campus
Remarks from Dr. Turac
On Thursday, April 30, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) partnered with Deep Tech Connections to host an international networking breakfast at the Japan Innovation Campus in Silicon Valley. The event brought together government representatives; startup delegations from Japan, Sweden, and Canada; and the local deep tech community.
The event began with remarks from Dr. Serdar Turac of Deep Tech Connections, followed by remarks from Consul General Kotaro Otsuki, who expressed the hope that this event would help governments and the private sector come together to support startups across international borders. There were presentations from JETRO and NEDO representatives on Japan’s innovation ecosystem initiatives, in addition to presentations from Swedish innovation agency Vinnova and the Consulate General of Canada in San Francisco on similar initiatives from their respective countries.
Finally, there was a special presentation by Scott Sumner, representing the Global Partnerships team at the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), who shared information on DIU’s mission to get cutting-edge startup tech to US defense agencies. Audience members included Bay Area venture capitalists with ties to Japan, Sweden, Canada, and the US, who networked over breakfast while discussing the latest trends in the deep tech ecosystem.
