Introduction to the USTPO seminar
On Thursday, June 18, Deputy Consul General Takeshi Ishihara delivered welcoming remarks at a joint seminar organized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), an event for Japanese business leaders navigating the US trademark process.

In his remarks, the Deputy Consul General noted how trademarks have been key to the success and growing popularity of many Japanese brands in the United States. The seminar featured presentations from trademark policy experts, including Jason Lott, Acting Regional Director of the USTPO’s Western Regional Outreach Office, and Mai Miyaoka, a Principal Patent Examiner at the Japan Patent Office (JPO).

Presenters examined the trademark policies and protections in place in both the US and Japan, as well as key differences between the two markets. The event also included a panel discussion on the future of trademarks in the AI era, featuring speakers from the USPTO, NEDO Silicon Valley, IP law firm Christensen O’Connor Johnson Kindness (COJK), and Japanese IT service startup VALUENEX. The event ended with a networking opportunity for members of the business community to foster new cross-Pacific ventures.
