On Saturday, July 4, Consul General Kotaro Otsuki joined the 24th Tule Lake Pilgrimage hosted by the Tule Lake Committee at the Tule Lake National Monument in California, the site of Tule Lake camp and segregation center. In this location, a total of nearly 30,000 people of Japanese descent were incarcerated during World War II. During the Memorial Ceremony honoring those who passed away during their incarceration, Consul General Otsuki delivered remarks paying respects to the deceased and expressing his gratitude to the organizers and those who continue to share the memories of Tule Lake.
Consul General Otsuki also had the opportunity to stamp the Ireichō, a book containing the names of approximately 125,000 people of Japanese descent who were forcibly incarcerated during World War II throughout the United States. At this year's pilgrimage ceremony, stamps were affixed to the names as an act of tribute and remembrance for those who passed away while incarcerated at the Tule Lake facility. Following the Memorial Ceremony, Consul General Otsuki toured the remains of the site.
The Tule Lake Pilgrimage is held biennially to raise awareness and promote public education about the history of Japanese American incarceration.
