On Thursday, August 6, Consul General Kotaro Otsuki attended the 81st Commemoration of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima held at Fresno State University’s Peace Garden. The event was hosted by the Human Rights Coalition of the Central Valley and Honorary Consul of Japan in Fresno Dr. Joy Goto.

In his remarks, Consul General Otsuki stressed that war inflicts immeasurable tragedy on many people and that to ensure such sufferings are never repeated, Japan, as a peace-loving nation, will work to uphold the international order based on the rule of law. He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to working with the United States, having overcome a shared painful history to become close allies.

At the same Peace Garden in 2020, seedlings that descended from a tree that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima were planted. Consul General Otsuki visited the saplings remarking on their growth and resilience.
