Go Events with Yasuko Imamura

From Thursday, February 5, through Sunday, February 8, Go instructor Mrs. Yasuko Imamura of the Kansai Go Association visited San Francisco to give workshops and lectures on the game Go.

(1) On Thursday, February 5th, Mrs. Imamura visited Washington High School and introduced three Japanese language classes to Go manners and rules. Around 90 students enjoyed learning about and playing go.

(2) On Friday, February 6th, in partnership with the Japan Society of Northern California, Mrs. Imamura gave a 2-hour introductory lecture and workshop on Go. Asound 15 participants were able to learn about the history and rules of Go and played their first games.

(3) On Sunday, February 8th, in partnership with the Bay Area Go Players Association, Mrs. Imamura gave a lecture to intermediate Go enthusiasts on how to become better players. After her lecture, Mrs. Imamura was able to review previous game records with attendees and give them suggestions on plays to make in the future. Around 15 players of varying skill levels attended this event.

About Go
Go, or igo in Japanese, is a two player board game that originated in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago. It is believed to have been introduced to Japan by the scholar Kibi Makibi in the beginning of the 8th century. Go was actively played during the Nara period (710-794) and the Heian period (794-1185) as a game of the aristocracy. Go soon found its way to public popularity and has been enjoyed by people of all ages and levels as a game of skill and strategy.

About Yasuko Imamura
Yasuko Imamura was born in Kyoto and graduated from Ryukoku University College of Buddhist Studies. Originally of the Kansai Ki-in, as an instructor, she has commentated on professional matches, organized and chaired events, and contributed to the spread of Go. She has appeared on NHK television shows explaining Go and has made Go fans out of all ages of viewers through her excellent explanation style. She currently holds an amateur 6 Dan in Go.
