As part of an effort to further strengthen the bonds between former JETs and Japan, the Council for Local Authorities and International Relations (CLAIR) carried out the “Satogaeri Project” from November 9 to the 13. The Satogaeri Project saw 12 former JETs from 11 different countries return to the towns and cities they worked in during JET and reconnect with the communities and people there.

Among the 12 representatives were two from the United States, both actually from the Bay Area. Mark Frey, president of the JET Alumni Association of Northern California, visited his placement of Kumamoto City (Kumamoto), and Xander Peterson, the United States JETAA Country representative, visited Miyakonojo City (Miyazaki). During the trip the two had the chance to tour the areas they had lived in during JET, visit old colleagues and favorite spots, and even teach some classes at local schools.

According to Xander Peterson, “Revisiting these places and reliving the wonderful memories made there excited me about the future of the JET Program, the JET alumni, and the U.S.-Japan relationship as a whole.”
