Applications Open: Asia-Kakehashi Project + (Plus)

The 2025 application period for the Japan Semester Scholarship: Asia-Kakehashi Project + (Plus) is now open.
 
This program is hosted by AFS in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Eligible high school students studying Japanese language in Asia and G7 member countries have the opportunity to study in Japan for 5 months, attending a Japanese high school while staying in a dormitory or with a host family.

Program Details

  • Duration: August 2025 - December 2025 Note: The schedule is subject to change.
  • Content: Study abroad at a Japanese high school with dormitory-stay or homestay
  • Fee: Full scholarship sponsored by the Japanese Government
  • Prospective Number of Participants: 100
  • Support: All participants will be supported by AFS Japan’s experienced local volunteers and professional staff during the program in Japan. Pre-program support will be provided by AFS/NGO under the AFS policies and guidelines.

Eligibility Criteria

2025 program applicants must meet the following criteria:
  1. Between 15 and 18 years of age, born after April 2, 2007, and before April 1, 2010;
  2. Citizen of one of the countries/regions listed in the list on call for application paper at the time of application;
  3. Obtained minimum of 60% marks in principle in all subjects in the latest examination at school and overall minimum average of 60% marks in all subjects for the past two years;
  4. Learners of Japanese. Participants for the Japanese speech contests are encouraged to apply and have priority for the selection,
  5. Demonstrate strong potential of leadership to act as a bridge between the home country and Japan during and after the program; and
  6. Not have participated in the ASIA KAKEHASHI program before.
  7. Priority will be given to students of families with low incomes in case there are difficulties to select from the above A-F.
